Hello 2nd Grader,

Welcome to 2nd grade!  I am so excited about being your teacher this year!  I hope you are having a wonderful summer, and are beginning to get excited about the new school year.  I know I am, although I feel a little bit nervous, too.

This year, we will have lots of exciting opportunities to learn new things.  Be thinking about some things that you would like to learn more about!

I would like to learn a little bit about you- as would your classmates- so please complete the “What I Like about Me” activity sheet.  Take your time with your handwriting, and really think about your answers.  Please bring the completed sheet to school on the first day.

I am looking forward to seeing you soon!

  Love, Mrs. Page

Dear Families,

Welcome to 2nd grade! I am looking forward to meeting each of you, and working
together to make this a very successful year for your child. The following letter explains
things that are important for you and your child to know about the first few days of
school. Home and school communication is essential to your child's success, and I am
available to talk about any questions or concerns you have throughout the year. Here are
some of the best ways to reach me:, call the school at 603-863- 1681,
send in a note, or schedule a meeting. Newsletters will be sent home regularly to keep you
informed about what is happening in our classroom. I have also included a survey to give
you the opportunity to share some information about your child. If you could return this
survey with your child on the first day of school, that would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you,
Mrs. Catherine Page

The First Day of School:

When students arrive on the first day of school, I will be waiting for them outside and we
will enter the school as a class. This will probably continue for the rest of the first week.
After that, the students will walk right to our classroom and line up by our door.

Calling All Parent Volunteers:

I hope that anyone who wishes to spend time in our class will have the opportunity to do so.
Your involvement and support is appreciated. Here are some specific areas where we could
use help:

 WIN Program- Times to be arranged. This involves working with an individual
student or a small group of students on a specific academic skill, or area in which
they need enrichment.
 Four Winds Science Program- Times to be arranged.
 Writing Time- Times to be arranged. Assist students as they work on independent
 Party/Special Event Planning- Help organize special classroom events and/or
coordinate parent volunteers.
 Photocopying, Book Making, or Preparing Materials

Please let me know if you are interested in helping in any of these areas.

Homework Information:

After much consideration, Mrs. Johnston and I have made some changes to the second
grade homework expectations for this year. We know that students work hard all day, and
are busy with extracurricular activities. In an effort to preserve some family time, we will
no longer be sending home weekly homework packets. This year, your child can expect
weekly spelling activities in addition to a reading log. If students have difficulty finishing
classroom assignments, these may also go home to be finished as homework.
Please work with your child to come up with a homework routine that works for your
family. (Designate an area, prepare supplies, set a schedule, etc.)

Classroom Supplies/Needs:

Most school supplies required for the school year will be provided for your child. There
are a few items that would be helpful for your child to bring in for his/her use throughout
the year.
 a pair of headphones for use with our class iPads
 a white 2-inch 3 ring binder for creating a personal portfolio

Occasionally, there will be times when I may request donations of particular items for
projects, or for the class to share. A few things we could use as we start the year are
listed below. If any families are willing to donate any of these items, it would be greatly

-tissues -glue sticks -sandwich and gallon ziploc bags
-Clorox wipes -colored pencils -double- sided tape

Other Important Information:

*Please be sure to send your child to school on the first day with a written note
stating how he/she will be going home (include bus number, if applicable). Let me
know in writing how your child will be going home on subsequent days if it will be
different from the first day.

*If in the future your child is going to be picked up or take a different bus, be sure to
send in a dated note.

*Please label your child's lunchbox, backpack, and clothing (especially winter apparel when
the time comes).

*Please realize that the transition from summer vacation to back to school, as well as the
change from 1st to 2nd grade, while exciting, is very tiring for your child. Six hours is a
long time to pay attention, follow directions, and get-along, let alone learn! Your child will
likely be exhausted during the first few weeks of school. Be reassured that your child will
have given me his/her best for the day. In time, your child will adjust to the rigor and
demands of second grade.

Thank you for sharing your child with me for the school year!

Have a wonderful summer,

Mrs. Catherine Page
